Spellscribed is a series of fantasy novels revolving around the protagonist, a young and inexperienced Wizard named Endrance. Born the night that the Archmagus Valeria died, Endrance was gifted with the talent and mind for magic. He'd proven that he was more than capable of mastering the forces of magic and intellectual study at the hands of a master as mad as he was crafty. He was one of the Scribed, mages who had undergone a painful yet powerful ritual that granted them the ability to tattoo spells upon their very skin.

He had finally proven himself to his master, and was free to practice magic at his own pace. If that were all fate had in store for him, he would have been happy. However fate wanted more of this man's potential than a lifetime of quiet study.

Instead, he was appointed the Spengur of Balator, a country radically different from his own. He would face an entire city of people that prized physical might and shunned the mystic. There he would meet staunch allies, and dangerous foes. There, he could change the world, if he could only survive.

It is through the fires of strife that a person is melted down into the core of who they really are, and fate has stoked the flames white hot. Can he survive the blaze? And even more importantly, who will he be if he emerges from the other side?

To start, let me say, I paid for my copy of this book, did not know of the author prior to my reading this book, nor was it referred to me by anyone.

I am not going to provide any spoilers of the book, but did want to provide a review as I was surprised by this book. I have always been an avid reader of works of fiction, but more recently (past few years) taken a dive into the science fiction/Fantasy genre. When I first began doing so, I did not even know where to start. I was intimidated with all the authors and writing out there in the genre, and quite frankly decided on what I felt was the safest route, which was to begin with a movie I had watched, and then read the book. I then began narrowing to specific topics or character types (such as mage or mystical powers), and from there try to find books that held the most reviews, and dove in there hoping I would get lucky and find something I like. In this particular case, I did not see that many reviews, but the title and to be honest cover, caught my attention. I must say I could not have been happier with this choice of reading. I did not feel like I was reading a book on a 4th or 5th grade level to satisfy my appetite for fantasy, nor did it feel like an expanded short story that was whipped out in a couple months to make a buck. It is a very well written book containing a mix of humor, mystery, soul searching, of course, fantasy, and much more. To incorporate so many different aspects of the human emotion along with providing the sci/fi and fantasy aspect, and the mysteries of characters and magics, is just not something I've seen done very well or easily. ....top this off, with this being the foundation laying book of a series, and I'm further impressed.

Spellscribed Provenance edition by Kristopher Cruz Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

At first I really didn't like the main character's name, but eventually I got over it because the rest of the story is so darn good. The romantic relationships in this book though straight out of a harem manga and were handled very well. If polyamorous relationships aren't your thing. You might enjoy the fish out of water tale, as Endrance (I know it takes getting used to) struggles to adapt to changing surroundings and cultures. Be forewarned there is a cliffhanger that leaves you desperate to read the next one so you can see what will happen.
This is definitely one of the better fantasy novels I have read in a while. I couldn't put it down and read it in nearly all at once. Many self publishing authors have problems with editing or stilted writing but this was not apparent at all in the book. My only criticism is that the cover art is really bad. I think unless you can get some real professional cover art the you should just keep it as simple as possible, otherwise it make the book look amateurish. That said, I look forward to the sequel and will definitely follow the career of the promising new author.
Couldn't put it down! Nice reference to medieval armor and magic terms, well researched. I especially liked that I was not able to anticipate the next action even after I got the general drift of the story.
Even though this book is an adventure fantasy story there is a heavy emphasis of comedy along with it. Gladly this comedy gives the story an edge of lightheartedness that is rarely seen in such stories. I could not stop laughing every time the main character was mistaken for a girl and the bodyguard and his state of mind of hitting everything makes this stories enjoyable. Though it may be the inner teenage boy that is inside me, but I kinda wished that the main character and his love interests had more plot in the story. The ending of the story was disappointing, but then again this hives a good lead of to the sequel.
I almost didn't get past the first chapter. I found it a little choppy and ridden amateurishly. I'm totally guessing here, but I wonder if it was the first chapter the author ever wrote because the rest of the book got better and better both in terms of the story and in the quality of the writing. I'm very glad I read the entire book and I am very much looking forward to the next book in a series. I really want to encourage the author to continue writing because I think he has a real gift for it. The only thing I want to add is that I appreciate that the protagonist has a lot of confidence in himself. It's a very common genre, of wizard apprentices going off and having their first adventures, for the young man to be filled with self-doubt. But this particular character has a lot of confidence and seems mature beyond his years. Really enjoyed it.
This book was selected because I kept seeing it in my 'recommended' list and I thought i'd give it a try. It isn't a bad story, but it's not as in depth or detailed as I would've preferred. The story line was just fine, and i do appreciate the mix of characters and setting. I'm not sure i saw much character development though, but the dialogue was ok. Again, nothing too indepth or detailed. I would read the 2nd book to see where the story leads. Perhaps this is more appropriate for younger readers (pre-teens).
