As an author myself, I hate getting pulled out of a story by clunky writing or themes that are too complex. That being said, or written, Scarborough makes reading fun and easy! I was able to breeze through, even speed reading occasionally when the action got intense, which it did!
Right away, the tone felt like it was from a more distant time, but soon enough, I was thrust into a modern world with a pair of witches flying on brooms and an enchanted car driving two young girls away. Though it’s not a genre I read often, I loved letting my imagination soar with the gentle yet purposeful guidance of Scarborough’s words. She also does a good job of keeping the mood light enough for younger readers and has some humor to help with that as well, especially the part about a mortal eating magic food and transforming into…well, you’ll just have to read it to find out.

Potion of the Hound Mystical Mishaps Series Book 1 edition by Alicia Scarborough Children eBooks Reviews

I absolutely love this book and can hardly wait until the second book is written. The first paragraph of each and every chapter drew me into Ms. Scarborough's fantastic tale. If you love witches, spells, blunders, potions and of course broom flying you will be thoroughly immersed in this magical world. Young adults and older adults will love this story.
I came at this book from a slightly different perspective, so my review is a little different. Reading the book evoked the same feeling I get when I play a table-top RPG. Rolling a 20 for your character makes you cheer. Rolling a 1 for your character makes you cringe. But the best RPG stories often develop from the dreaded roll of 1.

This book is similar to that type of gaming experience. A little mistake made by the heroine, Helga, and suddenly, the story is knee deep in intrigue and adventure. And then we're cheering for Helga and her sisters to overcome their challenges.

The Potion of the Hound is a a solid start to a continuing series. I look forward to the next book.
What could possibly go wrong when rebellious young witch Helga ‘mixes up a few potions’ for the True Real Users of Enchantments Society? After all, it is to help her and her sisters cafe stay afloat. That’s a good thing. Right? Well, maybe not. So what could possibly go wrong when she ‘mixes up a potion’ and not in the intended way? Work with a demon to solve her problem? That’s a sort of good thing. Right? Well, not so much. This is such a fun read that will carry you away to a magical world and entertain until the last word. Can’t wait for the next in the series!
Looking for a non Harry Potter book for your young or not so young Harry Potter fan? This is the book for them, and for you - if you can sneak in a read before, and you will enjoy this entertaining magical drama centered around 3 young witches, and one of them is a bit of a rebel. A rebel with magic potions can cause havoc..and this coming of age novel is no exception. An exciting new talent for the world of Magical - Fantasy for the Muggles among us.
Entertaining adventure/mystery book. It's an engaging mix of drama, mystery, action, comedy, and suspense. Though the intended audience is younger readers, I'm an adult, and this book delighted and intrigued me. Like any good story, it unfolds and unfolds from the first page to the last, revealing secrets, connections, and complexities that all work together to make the world of the book and its array of characters multidimensional and exciting. Also, the lead character is a sassy, smart teenage girl!
Usually that's a question asked of oneself in the later years in one's life, not as a child. Due to an unfortunate chain of circumstances, this is a question Helga must answer. Faced with the Order of Magic threatening to rip apart her family, she sees only one clear choice. Her choices in life are the consequence of what happens when those with the power to do something refuse to "listen" to see what's actually happening. Tired of being at the mercy of Fate, when the choice opens up for her to take her life and the life of her family into her hands-- she barely bats an eyelash. She's a feisty little spitfire of untapped magical potential, and she'll need all of this plus a little extra to make it through the day after a mix up with her very important client's potion order. As if this wasn't enough, mix into this chaotic day the Order of Magic knocking on her family's door alongside working to keep under wraps the second life she's been leading in order to keep the family together. Blending inspiration from the world of magic as it may coincide in the Potter world but without the isolation of keeping the world of magic apart from the mundane -- Potion of the Hound is filled with magical mischief and challenges for young Helga and readers to face.
I have read many fantasy stories set in our realm where the magical folk take great care to hide from the non-magical mortals; Harry Potter series, Heir Chronicles, Spiderwick Chronicles, just to name a few of my favorites. What sets Alicia Scarborough's Mystical Mishaps Series apart is that the magical mortals and the non-magical mortals co-exist, with no need to hide. Of course, there are certain potions, foods, etc that are exclusively available to the magical folk. There is no sneaking about hiding your true self from the world.
The implications of that worldview is thought-provoking.

Helga and her two older sisters attempt to stay together as a unified family after the tragic disappearance of their parents. They decide to own and operate a cafe of their own, which was on the verge of closing when Helga was presented with an opportunity which would save her family's business. All she had to do was agree to make special potions for Lady Ava, promising as part of the deal to keep the secret from her sister. She eagerly accepted the offer, only to later regret her hasty decision.

This was a fantastic page-turning magical adventure. It is filled with humorous mishaps, an intriguing worldview, and serious repercussions for hastily made decisions. I greatly enjoyed it, and believe you will as well.
